The Descent and the Northern Arc
The journey from Tetebatu to Senaru by car is a spectacular, roughly three-hour exploration of Mount Rinjani’s southern and northern foothills, offering a circuitous route that reveals the volcano's many faces. Departing the cool, misty clove plantations of Tetebatu, the road initially descends through lush, terraced valleys and vibrant rural villages, heading westward towards the central plains. The air gradually warms as you leave the highland chill behind, merging onto the main north-south artery. Instead of heading south to the coast, the route turns decisively northward, beginning a long, scenic drive up Lombok’s less-traveled interior. This stretch is a journey through time, passing through traditional Sasak communities like Loyok, renowned for its bamboo handicrafts, and the historic town of Bayan, home to one of Lombok’s oldest mosques. The landscape evolves from rice paddies into drier, rolling hills, with the northern slopes of Rinjani, often more rugged and arid than the south, looming ever larger on the horizon, building a sense of anticipation for the mountain village ahead.
