The adventure begins in Senaru, a cool, misty village nestled at the foothills of Mount Rinjani. Leaving behind the lush rainforest and the sound of waterfalls, the road winds precipitously down the mountain slopes. This initial segment offers breathtaking panoramas of terraced rice fields and valleys shrouded in morning fog. The drive requires focus as the narrow, curving road demands careful navigation. Small villages dot the route, offering glimpses of local Sasak life. After about an hour of descent, the landscape gradually flattens, marking the transition from the highlands of North Lombok to the more urban outskirts, setting the stage for the long traverse southward across the island.

Upon reaching the main arterial road, the journey smoothes into a straight run through Lombok's heartland. The bustling provincial capital of Mataram whizzes by, a contrast of modern shops and traditional markets. Beyond the city, the route parallels the coastline for a stretch, with occasional glimpses of the sea on the left. The scenery shifts to vast expanses of dry, savanna-like plains and tobacco fields, iconic to Central Lombok. The road is generally excellent here, allowing for steady progress. The dominant landmark becomes the majestic Mount Rinjani, now viewed from a distance, its peak often visible in the rearview mirror, a constant reminder of the journey's origin.

The turnoff from the main highway towards Praya and the southern coast signals the final leg. The atmosphere changes palpably; the air feels warmer and drier, charged with the anticipation of the ocean. Passing Lombok's international airport, the road leads into a flatter, more arid landscape scattered with low shrubs. Signboards for surfing schools and beach cafes begin to appear, the first hints of the tourist-centric Kuta area. The excitement builds as the road crests small hills, offering the first, fleeting views of the brilliant blue Indian Ocean on the horizon, promising the coastal delights that lie just ahead.

Finally arriving in Kuta Lombok, the vibe is instantly vibrant. The main strip is lined with cafes, warungs, and surf shops. However, the true destination lies just beyond. A short drive east leads to Gerupuk Bay, a sprawling inlet famous for its world-class surfing. The view from the hill overlooking the bay is spectacular—several peaks break in the distance, and traditional fishing boats, or jukungs, bob in the water. The journey here from Senaru feels worlds away, having traded mountain serenity for salty, oceanic energy. Gerupuk serves as the gateway to the more secluded beaches waiting further west.

From Gerupuk, a scenic coastal road winds westward past rolling hills. The first discovery is Pantai Mawun, a near-perfect crescent of white sand hugged by two green headlands, with calm, turquoise waters ideal for swimming. Just around the corner lies the smaller, rockier cove of Are Guling, a hidden spot popular with locals. The journey culminates at the expansive Selong Belanak, a long, wide bay with gentle beginner-friendly waves and soft sand, framed by dramatic hills. Reaching these pristine beaches after the long haul from Senaru makes their beauty feel like a well-earned reward, a perfect finale to Lombok's cross-island odyssey.
